Down & Dirty Live at the Fourth Street Station 2005 Final Set
Down & Dirty was a band that included myself (guitar), my father, Norm Dakota (vocals, guitar), Jim Peitala (drums) and Dale Demaris (vocals, Bass). 2004 & 2005 were the hey day of Down & Dirty. This is a live recording of our first gig at the Fourth Street Station in Grand Rapids, MN in 2005. This particular show featured a very pumped up guest musician in Mike Bebo on Harmonica.
Performance from 2002 of an unreleased song of mine. I believe it was the Logger's Inn located in Bigfork Minnesota (same place I would meet my wife 3 years later). This is the only time I ever performed or recorded any version of the song to date. If I remember correctly I recorded the gig with a four track tape recorder and a couple mics hanging from the ceiling (people looked at me funny but I'm glad I got it on tape!) The Band at the time was The North Alley Cats: Norm's on bass, Brent on Drums and backup vocals and BP takes lead vocals and guitar. Recording is sound only, slideshow is out of boredom. The song itself I wrote sometime in 2002 while I was working on my second solo album, which eventually ended up with 30 songs, this one being #31 it never made it on either disc of the Double Album: Slaves To The Sun. It became a band practice favorite though in 2002 and was performed this one time at a gig. I wrote the song very quickly on a napkin in my kitchen and put it up on the fridge with a magnet. It was of course actually about something. The story goes back to 1999, when I started dating who would be my first wife. She was going to college south of the Twin Cities and sometimes on the weekends I would drive down there to see her. I remember going to a lot of baseball games at the Metrodome together and staying in a lot of random hotels. It was great times and so the song "Missing Minneapolis" and the line "If I can get through the week I will have a weekend in your arms" calls back to that time. That was about the time when I was writing the middle and end of the Army of Ghosts CD. The line "but not no more" was added to the song just prior to this performance as a nod of support to Norm (Bass in this performance) who had just ended a relationship with a woman living in Minneapolis. I honestly think the solos I play in this song are some of my best. I always played the solo differently every time but once this recording was made I knew I needed to learn the solo I played note for note and perfect it. I especially like the clean tone lead at the end, I'm playing some kind of Strat copy and it sounds almost B.B. King like somehow.
Badlands live cover of The Cookie Blues in Grand Rapids, MN at the Vous. Mike Webber on Harmonica & Lead Vocal, Dale Demaris on Bass, Norm Dakota on rhythm and lead guitar, Jimmy Peitala on Drums, Richard "Hollywood" George on the keys and Mr. Barry Paul on Lead Guitar. I especially like my over the top, wah infested blues solo in this one, still one if my favorite performances after more than a decade.
"One Of Those Nights..." JD Slick Live in Grand Rapids, MN Nov 6, 2006
A random gig I played in 2006. It's me (Barry Paul) on lead guitar. I will add the others names here once I get permission. I actually sing a couple in this show too. That night we covered Van Halen, George Thorogood, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ted Nugent, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Johnny Lang, Black Sabbath, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, Lynard Skynard, AC/DC, Nazareth, Green Day and more.. https://archive.org/details/jdslicklivenov6
